Q
What does the SKLZ Gyro Swing do?

A
It’s the only training club that teaches you how to swing the club correctly based on feel. The club literally “comes alive” in your hand to guide you to swing on plane, shift your weight properly, and to execute a true release. Conversely, you’ll feel resistance to swings (especially slice swings) in which you are off-plane, come “over-the-top,” cast the club, have an early release, scoop, or fail to shift your weight properly.

Q
What does that mean for my swing?

A
Giving you the feel for a technically correct swing (on plane, proper weight shift, true release) will build muscle memory to ultimately help you consistently hit the ball straighter and with more distance. You’ll swing on plane, have your lower body power your swing, hit the sweet spot of the clubface more often, and get a solid release and extension, all of which means more power and accuracy.

Q
Will the Gyro Swing help my swing mechanics?

A
Yes, but the real advantage is that because it teaches the correct mechanics through feel, it will help remove all those thoughts about positions and mechanics that tend to slow your swing down and throw it off. Your swing will be more technically sound while also being smooth and athletic.

Q
What’s the technology behind the Gyro Swing?

A
There’s a 20,000 RPM gyroscope in the clubhead of the Gyro Swing. The extremely fast spinning of the brass flywheel creates a strong force that wants to keep the club on a perfect arc around a center point. (The law of the conservation of angular momentum.) In this case, that center point is your spine, and the perfect arc represents an on-plane swing. It even turns your hands over (releases) to maintain its square position relative to the plane.

Q
Who should use the Gyro Swing? Is it just for higher handicap players?

A
The Gyro Swing is appropriate for players at any handicap level. It is ideal for beginners to learn the feel of a proper swing and develop good habits from the start. It’s perfect for high handicappers who have swing flaws (especially slices) and want to correct them to hit longer and straighter. Better players/low handicappers can use the Gyro Swing to refine their swings and further sharpen their timing. In fact, there are Tour players who are currently using it to help maximize their swings.
The Gyro Swing is also perfect as a teaching tool for golf instructors who want their students to understand what an on-plane swing, solid weight shift, and proper release feels like.

Q
When should I use it?

A
The Gyro Swing is perfect for pre-round warm-ups, keeping “feel” in the off-season, or any time you want to groove your ideal swing.

Q
What’s the proper way to use the Gyro Swing?

A
Turn the Gyro Swing on, and while waiting for it to get up to speed, take a comfortable, stable and balanced golf stance and use the integrated grip guide for proper hand alignment. (Do not ground the club.)
As the speed increases, swing back and forth at 50% effort, starting with smaller movement and gradually increasing to a full motion.
Keep a light grip to get the full feel of the gyroscopic action, and adjust as you’re swinging to feel resistance while avoiding too dramatic a release.
Focus on squaring the clubface where the ball would be positioned, and releasing just beyond that point. (Proper motion of the arms, torso, and legs will then become a natural reaction. The challenge is to avoid releasing too early.)
Look to keep the black portion of the shaft in view throughout the swing — yellow means you’re turning the clubface off-plane. Avoid a quick opening of the clubface (clockwise turn) to keep from a “slice” position. Once up to speed, take faster swings with good tempo, focusing on a full, balanced finish. The Gyro Swing will keep you from having to think about your hands or arm positions, and you will start to feel the large muscles working correctly with good tempo.
Swing continually at full speed for just a few minutes to groove the proper fee
Turn off the Gyro Swing and continue the session while the motor slows all the way to a stop.
Make the same solid motion and release all the way to the Gyro Swing motor’s complete stop to take the feel of a perfect swing into the rest of your warm-up or practice.

Q
What should I feel when I’m using the Gyro Swing?

A
Throughout the swing, you’ll get different sensations based on how you’re swinging:

POSITION CORRECT INCORRECT
Backswing IF YOU keep your club on plane through your backswing and cock your wrists correctly…
YOU’LL FEEL virtually nothing... the backswing will be nice and smooth
IF YOU take the club back inside or outside, or take it up too steep or too flat…
YOU’LL FEEL the Gyro Swing resist the movement and try to push you back on plane
Downswing IF YOU keep your club on plane to start your downswing, retain the angle between your left arm and the club that you established at the top of your swing, and drop your hands and club into the slot…
YOU’LL FEEL virtually nothing... the start of the downswing will be nice and smooth
IF YOU get off plane or “come over the top,” “cast” or “throw” the club at all, or start turning your shoulders before your hips…
YOU’LL FEEL the Gyro Swing resist the movement and try to push you back on plane, and your hands turn over dramatically and early into your downswing
Impact IF YOU shift your weight to your front leg and make sure your hands reach the impact position before your clubhead…
YOU’LL FEEL the clubface squaring smoothly to the point of the ball (impact)
IF YOU keep your weight hanging back on your rear leg, and let the clubhead reach impact before your hands…
YOU’LL FEEL your hands turn over violently and early (near your back foot, well before the ball position)
Release IF YOU shift your weight properly and execute a true release...
YOU’LL FEEL your hands turn over smoothly at or after the ball position
IF YOU “throw” the clubhead or break your wrists, or break your left elbow early (“chicken wing”)...
YOU’LL FEEL your hands turn over dramatically, well before the ball position near your back leg

Q
What are its other features?

A
The Gyro Swing has a dual-colored shaft (black on top, yellow underneath) to help visually reinforce what the feel of the club is telling you. Throughout your swing, you should only see the black portion of the shaft. If you see yellow, it means you are off plane and the clubface is not square to the plane. You can use this guide to help correct your swing.
The Gyro Swing also features a see-through grip guide that allows you to position your hands correctly on the club while still having the feel of an actual club grip.

Q
How is the Gyro Swing powered?

A
It runs on six (6) AAA batteries. Rechargeable batteries and a 4-slot charger are included with the Gyro Swing. To load the batteries, simply unscrew the power knob and place all six AAA batteries in the grip (positive side up toward the cap), and screw the power knob back in.

Q
How long do the batteries last?

A
The rechargeable batteries provide a life of approximately 32 minutes of continual usage (although we only recommend using the Gyro Swing for five minutes at a time). These batteries will run the Gyro Swing at approximately 20,000 RPM for nearly the entire charge. (Recharging four batteries at a time takes approximately one hour, and 30 minutes for two batteries.)
For the greatest battery life and maximum initial RPMs (during the first 10 minutes of usage), Lithium batteries can also be used in the Gyro Swing. While other batteries can be used in the Gyro Swing, we recommend only using the included rechargeable batteries or Lithium batteries. (Additional batteries and chargers are available through SKLZ Customer Service.)

Q
How do I turn it on and off?

A
This depends on which version of the power knob you have. For the original knob (no switch), turn the knob clockwise all the way to get the Gyro Swing’s motor to start spinning and getting up to speed. (In order to avoid stripping the threads, do not force the top on or overtighten.) To turn it off, turn the power knob counter-clockwise. Just a quarter-turn will suffice even though you may not initially hear the motor slow down. It will eventually slow to a stop.
For the new version of the knob, simply click the power switch on or off. If you need to replace the original switch with a new one, you can contact SKLZ Customer Service.

Q
Can I hit balls with the Gyro Swing?

A
No. The Gyro Swing has been created purely to help create a sense of feel for the proper swing plane and release. It has delicate parts in the clubhead that will break if you hit a golf ball with it. (This is also a violation of the SKLZ warranty, and we will not provide free replacements or allow for returns of clubs that have been used to hit a ball.)

Q
Why isn’t the Gyro Swing a full-length club?

A
Since hitting balls or the ground with the Gyro Swing will likely break the gyroscope parts in the clubhead, we kept the shaft length short. Do not ground the club at setup. Instead, set up with the clubhead a few inches off the ground so you don’t strike it during your swing.

Q
Where can I get a Gyro Swing?

A
You can order at the SKLZ Online Store or at your local golf specialty retailer.
